Gambling group estimates US will bet $1.8B on World Cup

The United States Football League (USFL) continues to attract gambling-related revenue from the World Cup, but the group insists it won’t go all in for next July’s football competition.

The USFL, which has the right to host the event in 2023 and beyond, plans to use about $1.8 billion that it collects from betting sites to pay for costs associated with the game, including its stadiums, uniforms, referees, staff and game broadcasts.

That means betting companies, which have to pay USFL fees, can expect to rake in more than $50 million next year, in addition to the $7 million it gets from USFL-supported international soccer tournaments.

The estimated US$750 million the USFL expects to pull in from betting sites, while US$25 million worth of the tournaments’ broadcasting rights are expected to be paid to a US broadcaster – USFL chief executive officer Mark Harrer is said to have indicated that could be NBC – will make a significant dent in the group’s losses in 2017, when it expects to be left with an $8 million gap from losses at the end of the regular season.

Last year, USFL president David Levy said he expected a net loss of about $400 million this year, which was more than a 10 percent decrease from $500 million in losses in 2016.

The USFL spent $1.1 billion on stadium construction and $700 million on infrastructure in 2017, making it the most expensive sport in the United States, according to the Sports Business Journal.

The USFL started using the money it collected from the World Cup in 2017 to pay for costs related to the US Cup – the USFL’s annual college football tournament.
