Tyler Perry announced through an Instagram post that he had passed away. It’s unclear if he died from suicide or drugs or a combination. He was 44 years old, and had been battling health issues for a while

The Tyler Perry star, who has won an Emmy, Golden Globe, Grammy and an Oscar, died Thursday (Dec. 5) of undisclosed causes, his spokesman said. Perry was 44 years old.

“He will be missed by his family, his millions of fans and our entire entertainment community,” Perry spokesman Ron Fair said. “His brilliance, humor and humanity will be missed.

“We ask that you please respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Perry had battled various health problems in recent years, including a thyroid condition, a heart condition and diabetes. It was his third suicide attempt.

“Over the past few years he has experienced some very challenging times,” his publicist, Lauren Zalaznick, said in a statement. “We believe that he has found the strength to overcome and that his life was not yet over.”

Perry was known for his comedy and stage performances and his musicals, but he was also an actor and filmmaker.

As a filmmaker, he often collaborated with others, including Tyler Perry, his sister Rose Leslie and Jason Robert Brown.

“Tyler and I always wanted to make movies together,” Perry said in a statement. “Our goal was to make a movie with talent that would resonate with audiences all over the globe.”

“It was our goal to show people what it was like to be one of the people, to live outside of the system and to live on an island,” Perry added.

As an actor, he has appeared on such shows as “Saturday Night Live,” “Friends,” “Frasier,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Mad About You” and so on.
