ST. MAARTEN – The music festival held Saturday by St. Maarten’s popular event promoter, St. Maarten Arts, was canceled due to high winds, festival organizers said Sunday.

An organizer for the event said the festival had been scheduled to happen at the Bay of Plenty Convention Center, but was shifted to another location in favor of getting more people to the venue.

The concert was to be “Rock the Bell Tower,” a festival celebrating the St. Maarten carnival, which was cancelled Saturday evening due to high winds.

“We regret to inform you we are forced to postpone the festival due to the strong winds throughout the event,” the organizer tweeted Sunday morning when the festival was supposed to last until Sunday night. “We are considering other options for tomorrow and we will of course let you know the result.”

Organizer of the festival, Janette Pouw, said at the time that the festival was scheduled to go on as planned Saturday.

Organizers of the festival said the festival was not to be held in the early hours of Sunday morning. Pouw said she had no word on whether there’d be a reschedule.

The festival had been a popular event for the past few years, but its popularity has been fading as more events are available.

“I’m disappointed to let the public down,” Pouw said then, adding that she was hopeful that there would be a “solution” to the problem — maybe next year.

Pouw said she hoped the festival would be held in the new location next year.

Organizers of the music festival said they have not scheduled another event.
