When Serena Williams was asked this week about her potential retirement, she quickly brushed it off. The world number 32, who has won four Grand Slam singles titles, has often spoken of retiring in the near future, though she has never quite specified the date with certainty.

“It wouldn’t be the first time I retire, but it’s all up to me now,” she said at a press conference at the US Open. “I don’t really care, I don’t know when it is, I don’t care. I do know that I’m really going to enjoy my time right now.”

Williams has said that the foot problem is likely to keep her off the court.

“It’s not a good time right now. I’m not going to get into a lot of details,” she said. “I have to figure out what’s going on with my foot and get back on top of things, but I do have a commitment to my family.”
