Martina Navratilova believes that Serena Williams paved the way for women to continue to play tennis. The former world No2 and five-time Grand Slam champion believes that women’s sport should not be reduced to ‘women’s sport’ as it is now often referred to, because the sport has not been given the same respect in the world of sport.

“Serena’s story is the one that was reported and that was made public during the time of her mother’s death. When her father was not as supportive as Serena was, she left tennis to go to the academy. And so one of the first stories that was told in the media was her story of leaving tennis in the early days because her father was not understanding as much as she did. “So a lot of people are now thinking that women can never win a Grand Slam again because they haven’t won the Grand Slams since Billie Jean King. What I’ve said is when people were watching these women in the early years, they didn’t know how many medals could be won, the level, the amount of talent that these women had. All of what I’m saying is women’s sport has not been given the same respect because of the way it was discussed.”
