Ontario will begin shutdown of essential businesses on Sunday

Toronto sets January date for city workers to return to the office, amid rising COVID-19 cases, Omicron uncertainty

Toronto will begin its mandatory shutdown of non-essential services on Sunday, as the number of cases of the coronavirus has soared through city neighbourhoods in recent days.

The Ontario government will announce on Monday that an open-ended public health order will permit essential businesses and workers who are essential to remain in the workplace until the Ontario government lifts the order.

Under the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) order, essential businesses must remain operational and working as usual. Non-essential companies will be closed until the order is lifted.

“It will be essential that businesses remain open to employees and customers under the Public Health Agency of Canada order,” said Lisa Thompson, director of the provincial government’s Ontario Enterprise Partnership.

“If essential businesses are closed, they will continue to be available for employees to continue to do their jobs, and we will continue to provide any necessary support.”
