Kanye West’s racial outburst is a different story than Donald Trump’s

Hollywood talent agency CAA cuts ties with Kanye West after antisemitic tirade

This past Saturday, Kanye West made headlines when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a photographer over her perceived anti-black commentary. A few days later, the president of the agency responsible for representing West’s career, CAA, suspended his agency’s relationship with him after a public exchange with the rapper, which is already a controversial issue within the industry.

West has faced a wave of negative attention since his arrest for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill a photographer outside of the New York City Yeezy store. The rapper’s tirade has been condemned as a hate crime and a “black-lives matter”-style protest against the police for what he called “acting like thugs.” He has also been criticized for the racial insensitivity of his outburst, which he has since dismissed as just a “bad situation.” While West has previously talked about being a racist, he has also admitted to being in the “black community” since he was “young.”

CAA and West have since been embroiled in a back-and-forth over the past two days, with the agency saying they would “suspend” ties if West is “unable to adhere to our values and standards.” When West’s legal team reached out, they were told that CAA would terminate their contract only if West doesn’t appear at any “future events.” And it’s now become clear that West is not ready to appear on a CAA event, anyway.

The rapper was in Toronto Saturday night for the launch of a new collection by adidas, and was booked for a special performance at the Vans All-Star Game. He’s also going behind the scenes at the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which also stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson.

So, this isn’t surprising, given Kanye West’s past statements. But it’s a very different situation from that of, say, Donald Trump, who has a history of making anti-Semitic remarks and then claiming he’s never said them. The White House recently forced the removal of the US ambassador to Israel from the country following a video they said showed him making anti-Semitic remarks
