A brush fire erupted Monday near the resort-hotel after a lightning strike ignited piles of brush, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The blaze started shortly after 5 a.m. and was declared an inferno-2 — a designation that means it is growing “rapidly” and “rapidly” — at 4:54 p.m., Cal Fire said.

The fire, which was burning along Highway 40 southwest of Lake Tahoe, was being treated as a human-caused incident, Cal Fire said in a news release.

Lake Tahoe Resort, with more than 1,200 rooms and a spa, is located in the heart of the area, at the base of the Sierra Nevada. It was built and opened in 1964 and closed in 2014.
