DoD Statement on Abortion Access on the Pentagon Campus

Pentagon Seeks to Reassure Service Members on Access to Abortion Information

A Defense Department memo to the Secretary of Defense and the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, shows that the DOD has a longstanding, clear, and repeated position regarding access to abortion access information in the military.

This policy, which DOD acknowledges as a legal requirement, was put in place to protect military personnel from “the unwanted intrusion of unwanted and unclassified information.”

In response to a request from a reporter, the Pentagon provided the following statement regarding abortion access on the DOD campus:

“All DOD personnel are bound by an oath of secrecy and are required to report any information regarding the military service of a ‘close friend’ or ‘household member’ from the time of enlistment to the end of the individual’s service in the Armed Forces. This policy applies to all DOD personnel, regardless of rank.”
