Afro-Pop Collective Rihanna and Kanye West Win Grammy Award

The Grammys are considering adding an Afrobeats category to its annual awards show. The nominees will be announced at a press conference on Feb. 10.

The Afro-pop collective, featuring singer Rihanna and producer Kanye West, has emerged as a contender for an award. “We think it is a positive, but we have a long way to go in terms of what is accepted and what is not,” producer Kanye West told Rolling Stone.

The group, which has scored only one Top 20 hit in the U.S., has collaborated with rapper Jay-Z, who has scored nine Top 20 hits.

The Black Entertainment Television show, hosted by Will.i.am, is considering adding a category in which artists perform in an afrobeat style.

The Grammy Awards, set to be televised on CBS Feb. 12, has been criticized in recent years for failing to recognize and celebrate African-American music.

The Recording Academy has commissioned a study of the Grammy Awards and plans in the not too distant future to release a report on how it selects nominees.
